The next page had a form with Aaron’s name on it – a medical report of sorts, dated back to 2004. It listed his birth date, blood group, allergies, and personal information.

Aileen flipped over and found a writeup in an illegible hand. She cursed, before pulling her phone out and using the magnifier app.

Aaron Ridge, she made out… then found the word alcoholic and…

Aaron Ridge is an alcoholic and chain smoker. He fell down the stairs, and has a fractured limb that isn’t expected to heal fully. But he will walk again.

He has refused hospital care, often behaving violently towards the staff. Pluto and Linda McCloughan have decided to take him to their house and nurse him.

A line cut across the report, and below it was a section dated 2005. There it read:

Mr Aaron Ridge passed away from a heart attack. Mrs McCloughan has found missing a dose of morphine. Did she kill him? After all, he had been bed ridden for over a year and the responsibility of taking care of him and his son rested solely on Linda. Did she snap? Pluto thinks so.

Aileen gasped. No matter, Ricky was upset to read this. Where had he found this file? How did he know it was legitimate?

And… she checked the date on the missing persons poster and then the year of the entry… the same year.

What was this about? What was Pluto hiding?

She went over to the last page of the report. The writer of the report continued:

However, Linda couldn’t have injected the morphine into him. Chances are, the man swallowed the tablets himself. Why would the glass of water have shattered on the floor beside his bed otherwise?

Why had they filed a missing person report if the man had died in his bed?

Aileen bit her lip, wondering what to do. She stood up and walked towards her car, eyes still on the file.

‘You stole it?’

She jumped, clutching the file to her chest. ‘Ricky! What are you doing here? I was just about to—’

‘Nosy bitch! Stay away from us!’ He snatched the file from her, glared, then stalked away.

She blinked at his back. Was he standing here all this time?

An interesting turn of events, this was.

Could Linda have murdered Aaron Ridge?
